A reflection on some of the mistakes I made, maybe you could learn from me

-Dont go in without a belief in the benevolence of the universe

-Don’t do it, unless you really really really want it

-Don’t do it unless its hard or some sort of level, whether that is challenging technically, a challenging story or some sort of personal goal

-Don’t go in without appreciating all that came before you. You stand on the shoulders of giants

-Don’t delude yourself into thinking you’re making anything new, everything’s been done before. Treat your content as a continuation “everything that came before and....”

-Don’t expect to be happy with what you’re doing, self satisfaction means you're learning nothing

-live not by the standards of this earth; Do it cause you want it, all other standards will fall away under pressure, for Pete's sake DO NOT do it for fame, money or pats on the back.

-Relax, its just a film, its not the end of the world if you can’t figure it out in time.

The broad outline is outrunning death, but a visual challenge was also to display
the clash between the organic form of the human and the rigid structure of his workload.

The Missionary

Here's the early development work I did on a short I'm working on with a very small team.

The story is about a man on an urgent mission while having to deal with being chased by death itself.

prep stuff from the storyboard

here's a few scrap images that i used to doodle out certain ideas for the board test.
An early idea was to have a slapstick comedy epic of the boyscout running in panic cause the cat was clinging onto his head.
None will say these are great drawings but what I like about prep drawings and thumbnails is that they really are the soul of your idea. Your idea comes from somewhere beyond yourself and you just kinda try to put it onto any sort of hard media before the idea goes away. Its not always pretty, usually too messy, which is why the next part is to sift through whatever you just vomited onto the page and figure out how to get people to see what you saw in your head.
So, enjoy my vomit drawings .....

Here follows a storyboard test I did couple of weeks ago while applying for an internship.

The original test was to get a interesting story out of a rather tame premise:

-Use any or all of the four predetermined characters:

Old lady/granny, a boyscout, a dog and the cat.

-The cat is in the tree, get the cat down safely.

-Make it funny, entertaining... appealing drawings....etc etc

-Oh and get it done in 60 panels max.

I did not want to turn it into a Tex Avery cartoon, you can't outdo Tex Avery at his own game.

My approach was to be a bit more serious, "How would these characters react to something that they were not expecting, something completely out of the blue?"

Hello to my very few listeners, make that very very few...

It's been a long time since I posted anything here.

I love animation, its outrageously tricky to get a grip on, but I've never felt this sort of thrill while grappling with anything this hard.

Life is a strange idea, living it often a battle between experiencing and expression.

I love the idea of expressing life through an abstract idea as pencil marks or pixel counts into a result that is an immersive experience.

This blog was intended to be a place that I could visit to look at my own work a bit more objectively.

Hopefully I'll get to scan in some of the things I've worked on in the recent past.

Hope you'll stick with me.
